I’m Proud of You - About the Show

The true story of a life-altering friendship between Tim Madigan, an “anonymous guy who wrote stories for a newspaper in Texas,” and Fred Rogers, the icon of children’s television and one of the history’s most beloved celebrities. In newspaper interviews in 1995, Fred turns the tables on the reporter, gently coaxing Tim to reveal his own inner truths, his “essential invisibles,” the painful realities that the journalist had until then kept hidden from the world. That included Tim’s life-threatening depression and pain from his relationship with a distant father. “Would you be proud of me?” Tim asks Fred as their friendship deepens. Fred’s reply is one for the ages. Later in the story, when Tim’s brother is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, Fred joins the Madigan family in a long and ultimately inspiring journey of inner healing.

Based on Tim’s critically acclaimed memoir of the same name, with searing drama, tenderness and humor, I’m Proud of You inspires audiences with its intimate depiction of human greatness, its acknowledgement of the universality of human suffering, and the redemptive power of friendship. In this fractured moment in human history, I’m Proud of You is an essential story for our time.

Roles

Tim: A native of Minnesota,Tim is a New York Times bestselling author, journalist and lecturer. He is funny, smart, dry and a bit irreverent, and his life was forever changed when he met Fred Rogers. This play is a recounting of their long friendship.

Fred: Fred Rogers of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. A television host, author, producer, musician and Presbyterian minister. He is wise, kind, soft spoken, and very intelligent.

A word from the playwrights about the actor playing Fred Rogers: it is important that the essence of Fred be conveyed, but not a restrictive “impression” of his famous look and voice. An excellent actor who captures  the spirit and objectives of Fred Rogers, regardless of his physical resemblance to Fred or lack thereof, can be successful in the role.
