Seeking performers for a development workshop of INAPPROPRIATE, a new play about time travel and queer friendship.

Co-written  by kt shorb (https://ktshorb.net/)  & Katherine Wilkinson (www.katherinewilkinson.com
Directed by Katherine Wilkinson
Produced by Christine Gwillim

Inappropriate has been developed at Fusebox Festival, The Tofte Lake Center, Columbia University, and GenEnCo.

ABOUT

Inappropriate follows a queer platonic romance spanning eight years where the two friends try to create a play together. During these eight years, their friendship sees them through divorce, infidelity, domestic abuse, MFAs, PHDs, several cross-country moves, and an ongoing struggle to love each other and themselves while living the fractured experience of queer time.

What is queer time? Cultural critic José Esteban Muñoz said, "queerness is not yet here." Queer time and queer life happens “out of order” amidst a sense of chaos. “Straight time” follows a predictable pattern–birth, puberty, marriage, procreation, and death. Queer time, by contrast, imagines worlds where these milestones are decentralized, and life can be lived nonchronologically. Queer time is both utopic and critical, expansive and specific. Inappropriate stages queer time through the use of nonlinear narrative, simultaneously overlapping time periods, and alternate realities that are integral parts of the story arc.

Some moments of queer time include enacting the same scene in “reverse” and “fast forward,” a suffragist book club reading in 1928, a witch's sabbath during colonial times, a conversation in 10,000 BCE, a 3045 AD space odyssey, a slightly drunk sexual encounter between kt & kw in 2011, an 1845 gathering of queer women in a babbling brook, a savage verbal conflict ending in a choke-hold in 2015, and kt conducting Berlioz’s “Symphonie Fantastique” in 1855.
