NAUTILUS MUSIC-THEATER is holding SINGER/ACTOR auditions for general professional development, including Rough Cuts performances, Composer-Librettist Studios, workshops, classes, and other projects.

Previous experience in opera or musical theater is not required, although applicants should be secure in their musical technique and theatrical finesse. The ability to read music is strongly encouraged but not required, as many wonderful performers learn by ear. We are particularly interested in performers from historically underrepresented backgrounds, and urge performers working in all styles of musical storytelling to apply, whether that be opera, musicals, alternative work, popular music, or any unusual or innovative approaches to telling stories through music. These auditions are open to all performers, regardless of union status. And while we love to hear our colleagues from around the country, these auditions are intended for local residents (MN, IA, and WI).

Screening Applications are now being accepted for AUDITIONS SLOTS scheduled for May 1, 2, and 3. If you are interested in being considered for an audition slot, please send a resume and, if available, a head shot to:

[email protected]
(no phone calls, please)

Notes for your cover email:

  • Put "Audition Request" in the subject heading.
  • Indicate a general preference for May 1, 2, or 3; afternoon or evening. Specific times will be negotiated upon acceptance.
  • Feel free to list references, although in some cases that information may already be on your resume.
  • Given the unique position of Nautilus in the Twin Cities theater community,  please indicate why you are interested in working with us. If you are not familiar with our work, please see the "Additional Information" section below.

Applications are due by Sunday, April 21. Acceptance emails will be be sent that week, but no later than Friday April 26. Because we have a limited number of audition slots, this is a screening process; submitting an application does not automatically secure you an audition slot.

If accepted, your audition will consist of two contrasting songs or arias (at least one should be in English) and a short monologue. An accompanist will be provided. Friendly conversation and playful exercises might ensue, and we will strive to make our interaction a pleasant experience.

Additional information:

Nautilus provides opportunities for the artistic growth of writers, composers, and performers who create, develop, and produce new operas and other forms of music-theater that are emotionally expansive, dramatically engaging, and spiritually stimulating. We also explore existing work in innovative ways.

Our full productions of such works as Moonlit Walk Home, Stations Of The Heart, Twisted Apples, The Fantasticks, and many others (including the Ivey Award-winning Ordinary Days, Sister Stories, and I Am Anne Frank) have been enthusiastically received by critics and audiences alike.

Still, we are not a regular production company; we focus on artistic development. In these general auditions we are looking for performers who are interested in our artistic goal of developing integrated, radiant performers. A radiant performer (1) communicates a sense of vulnerability in performance by responding with spontaneity in the moment; expressing emotional depth, breadth, and nuance; and taking risks, (2) demonstrates a balance of skills and confidence in musical, emotional, and physical expression, (3) commits to the disciplines of the craft and life-long learning, (4) develops an individual artistic voice of unique creative expression, and (5) understands genres in the field regardless of personal preferences.

Among the performers with whom we have worked extensively over the years are Christina Baldwin, Jen Burleigh-Bentz, Gary Briggle, JP Fitzgibbons, Vanessa Gamble, Daniel Greco, Bradley Greenwald, Andrea Leap, Joel Liestman, Norah Long, Ann Michels, Jennifer Baldwin Peden, Jill Anna Ponasik, Keri Rodau, and too many others to mention.

More information about Nautilus is available at www.nautilusmusictheater.org.

Our work is made possible, in part, by the McKnight Foundation, the City of St Paul's Cultural STAR Program, the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, and through support from satisfied audience members and other citizens who recognize the importance of the arts understructure. Thank you to all!
