Review of “Master Works: The Rembrandt Plays” posted by Ginger J. on February 11

The Master Works series by Commedia Beauregard is an inspired idea, providing an outlet for the diverse creativity that makes the Twin Cities a cultural hotspot, despite our frozen tempratures.

The Rembrandt Plays are far more serious than the previous works of this series, delving into murderous political secrets, impassioned war crimes, and split allegiaencies. The plays give us two sides of fatherly love and pride, and warm our hearts with a mother's capacity to dream. One has to wonder how far some of these plays have deviated from Rembrandts original inspiration, but there is no doubt that his masterpieces come alive onstage and fill the night with color and light that is sometimes chilling, sometimes comforting, and always moving.

That being said, it is a low budget event, with artists of varying skill and experience. Like the Fringe Festival, the series is not jurried or pre-screened as a regular production would be. The positives of this include oppurtunities for young local artists to show their work to the public, and changes for the public to see art that is new and unique. Unfortunately, the downside is that there is a lot of hit-and-miss, and not all of the 6 pieces live up to Rembrandt's name. Still, a night well worth while. I look forward to the next in the series.
